Politics: Restoration of Democracy in Nepal

By Somnath Ghimire

Right after the Royal take over in October 4th 2002, burdens grew and became worse, but the catastrophic deterioration occurred under the present regime. Nepal is now considered as an Undemocratic Country with unconstitutional government.

Reformation and democratization of Nepal is possible when the people of Nepal and the world democracies unite their efforts to facilitate this reformation and democratization. Dictatorship cannot bring stability in Nepal. Recognition of people's rights is an essential ingredient in bringing stability, peace and prosperity in our country Nepal.

It is to be warned that plots against hard earned democracy are on to lead the country towards party less autocratic system again in the country and our leaders should know by now. The "regression" will not last any longer in our country.

We all need to be aimed at positive, constructive debate and an honest and frank exchange of views, so that our conclusions are in-line with the challenges of our times and expectations of our people. I am sure you are all looking forward in participating in the campaign for the restoration of Democracy in Nepal without any conditions.

Present day, Nepal, resembles a sick person so fallen, it cannot fall any further. Collectively, we must help Nepal recover, for its health concerns the rest of the world as well. It is time for us to build a new, reformed, open, reconciled and integrated Nepal, which will take its rightful place as a democratic country and a responsible member of the international community. Let us urge Bush Administration, United Nations and our neighboring countries to give pressure to our king for the immediate restoration of Democracy in Nepal.

The present dictatorship has brought destruction upon our country. It is the time for freedom. However, yesterday is already history. The present is important. Now is the time for all of us to unite and be ready to deliver this positive change for our own sake, and that of the people of our country, Nepal. Let us not shy away from this awesome challenge. Let us die for Democracy & Peace in Nepal.

In the twenty first century every one wants to live in democracy. It is our duty to foil the attempt of the non-democratic forces and make the foundation of democratic Nepal much stronger.

The royal move of October 4, 2002 in Nepal has posed a serious threat against the democratic order and the constitution of 1990. Democracy is in jeopardy and human rights are at stake.  The king's Nepalgunj speech and the interview in the TIME magazine clearly prove us that he wants to be an autocratic monarch, which is unacceptable in 21st Century. Let me tell you this, our king should look forward not backward. Instead of looking his past generation, he should think about our generation. Our King should understand that what the present generation wants. We demand an immediate resignation of current Prime minister. We urge our king to form an all party government.

Let us all support the agitating five party's and the student union's  various protest programs to be carried out  in the future and work together towards an immediate restoration of democracy in Nepal.

Postulating various theories can be orgasmic intellectually.
A quote below by Bernard is pretty thought provoking and perhaps one of the sources to my low oppinion of politicians, political parties and their sympathizers. The more they say they are for the people the deeper and longer their claws and their teeth are. The more vicious they get to prove their point, the more naked they become unable to hide their EVIL intentions.
Enjoy the quotes!

For some reason, the article did not allow me to post everything I had to see. Here is the remaining part. Khalifa-jyu, I am glad you liked my comments.:)
---> He says, "Let us not shy away from this awesome challenge. Let us die for Democracy & Peace in Nepal." Put it another way, let us sit in front of our PCs in New York and talk about developing Nepal. Once in a while, go to Timesquare, carry a few Nepali flags and feel important about the protest, send news to a bunch of nobody-except-the-contributors-read papers and be complacent about it! Reading the article alone (without the comments that followed), I thought this was a humor piece! As a matter of fact, there are already people dieing for democracy in Nepal. The leader of the Maoist Victim Association was murdered, so many political activists have been killed. Isn’t it ridiculous when you call NOW for sacrifices?
The bottom line: the call of the time is to build bridges, not walls. Be it between the parties and the palace, between the palace and the maoists or between the parties and the maoists, a middle ground of negotiation has to be found. Certainly, at times we get frustrated with what is going on. Personally, I think King Gyanendra is as, if not more than, responsible as the political parties for the current mess. I have expressed this displeasure at various places (unfortunately, also in only-the-contributors-read type of papers). But deep within, I have this feeling that they should get UNITED. Make the king weaker if you can. Make the Maoists weaker, ostracize them politically if you can. But if we try to eliminate any of them right now, this mess will continue for another decade and ten years down the road, we will again be arguing about some meaningless article--supporting one of the players in Nepali politics--posted in Nepaldigest.
I hope the writer of the article takes my criticisms positively.

Yubraj Acharya has hit the bulls eye! His comments are balanced, intriguing and even encouraging!
TND's historical purposes and Nepalis are served much better if writers and readers encourage and stand for free, balanced and most importantly "unbiased" news and views that is propoganda free.
We as members of civic society have unflenching moral obligations towards our fellow nepalis so that real issues are constantly brought to the surface not clouded by propoganda and biased political organization foxing as deceitful intellectuals.
Kudos Yubraj, I admire your courage!

sommnath,
instead of focusing on the politician for right now who are in Nepal why not focus on your Chief guest "ambassdor Murari Sharma" If i were you -i would try to ask Murari Sharma to resign right now form the ambssdorship right now. YHou shoudl write a letter to him.......and protest in NY if you have any guts. He is still making money from nepal govt, using their car and apartment and free phoen calls etc and got him a new job at the United Nations and drawing 2 salary. How come you guys are quiet about it. ISn't this illegal.......? If you are so concerned you shoudl ahve done thaqt a long time......But I know you will never write about him...even made him your Chief guest........cuz he is also Congressi and therefore you would rather hide is illegal stuff. Your org should ask him to resign right now or leave hIs united nations job. He cannot work in 2 place when he is representing Nepal. He is a badmas and not ethical and legal at all. What do you have to say on this matter? AS you are in NY and your org is based in NY don't you think it your duty to do something..........
Oh i am sorry! after all he was ur chief guest and ur congress dai.

Despite being an ardent supporter of multi-party system in the country myself, I have reservations in accepting what the author has said in this article. I see a need for the author to go back to school and refresh whatever knowledge of politics and economics he has had. An attempt to rouse people against the system without having a clear plan at hand will only enfeeble democracy--the very system the author seems to want to protect.
I am myself a poor writer. But, I guess, that does prevent me from constructively criticizing other writers. This is to mean that nobody, in response to post, should come and say, "what have you written?"
Here are my two cents on the article:
--> The article calls for a support towards the on-going agitation against the king, but does not describe the nature of the protests. If the author is taking about continuing the so-called "peaceful protests"--burning tyres, hurling stones at building and destroying insfrastructures--this inquisite mind wonders how this agitation is different from the ongoing Maoist movement.
-->The article is basically a bunch of cliches-- for eg,"Dictatorship cannot bring stability in Nepal. Recognition of people's rights is an essential ingredient in bringing stability, peace and prosperity in our country Nepal."
The writer talks as if he is the propounder of this theory. Anyway, where is the back up? Where are the numbers to support this claim. If I said, the Sun is going around the earth, would you agree? The claim that dictatorship does not bring stability is flawed. It CAN bring stability. The fact of the matter is, that stability is unlikely to be sustainable. It is momentary.

Your article is not even worth posting in TND foundation........I have never read any sh*tty low grade aritcle in TND foundation since its existance.......BESIDES YOURS. You should send your article to all third grade papers like TELEGRAPH< JANAASTHA..........this paper shows the size of your brain. Please write interesting article and do not make TND another DUEBA CONGRESS FORUM. WE DO NOT WANT TND TO BE LIKE CONGRESSI PAPER. We want to read interesting articles.
If you need to complain first complian to your boss or god father MR DEUBA -he is the one who should be blamed here for creating this chaos in NEpal. After that complain to your another ex god father girija for convincing DEUBA to postpone the election...........your ex god father was the one who wanted DEUBA TO BE OUT OF POWER so that he could be in power........basically it your CONGRESSI BROTHERS who created this situation just to be in POWER. IF YOUR BROTHERS WERE MADE PM TODAY I AM SURE !110% YOU WOUDL HAVE KEPT QUIET. Like these people you are also power hungry........i am sure you are waiting to be another ambassador of NY like MURARI SHARMA.

Hello Mr.Ghimire,
I am sure you read the Telegraph on Nepalnews.com. Infact I just know you do, for the last six months the weekely has been saying a political change is inevitable. Only people like could have appetite for such a paper.Your articles are no different, every month its the same. If the five parties have not managed keep the king under control how can you residing in America make a difference. The agitation is finished. Its over!!!! Once the election dates are announced whats the point of agitating ? Discreet negottiations are well underway with NC and the government. The ground reality is different Somnath. Therefore, the effort to unite to NC and NC(D) before elections. U know why though ? I am sure you dont... to stop UML and other left wing parties to have a larger share in the newly elected Pratinidhi Sabha. You will be surprise next week...............

Natraj:

When you write comments against a person, you must have thought that the article is comment worthy, right? (Else you would never have written it).

That fact alone proves that this is an article worthy to read and ponder upon just like you have done.

It is a differnt issue that you don't agree with his views. And that makes you sore.

Where do you get a clown like Som Nath? His arguments are quite pathetic and his diction atrocious. Where did he go to school? Is he going to die for democracy or is he going to try to get his GC by hook or by crook and live here in the good ole US of A.
